Syracuse is located in the north-central section of the state, just east of New York's Finger Lakes Region. Terrain of the area is gently rolling, and elevations in the city range from 364 to 681 feet above sea level.

Topographical features include the Erie Canal, Seneca River, Onondaga Lake and Onondaga Creek. Oneida Lake is located northeast of the city.

Continental. The area's climate is influenced by the proximity of Lake Ontario and the Adirondack Mountains. Average temperatures range from 16°F to 81°F. Average annual precipitation totals 26 inches of rainfall and 112 inches of snowfall.
