Rochester is on the south shore of Lake Ontario, approximately midway between the upper and lower ends of the lake. The metropolitan area extends southward from the lake for about 25 miles on both sides of the Genesee River, which divides the city's 36 square mile area into two almost equal parts. The city, a major port for direct ocean shipping, is on the routes of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Erie Barge Canal and the New York State Thruway.

Monroe County has an area of 659 square miles, and elevation in the county rises from the lake shore to its highest point of 1,040 feet above sea level in the extreme southeastern portion of Mendon. Monroe County includes 19 towns and 10 villages. Towns, villages and their populations include:
