The rugged, rocky coast north of Portland changes to sandy beaches south of the city. Inland the terrain varies from level to rolling farm and pasturelands interspersed with heavily wooded areas. Topographic features include Sebago Lake, 15 miles north of Portland; many smaller lakes; the Fore, Mill, Stroudwater and Presumpscot Rivers; and numerous streams.
