G e o g r a p h y
Greater Portland is located in the southwestern section of the state along the Atlantic Coast. The rugged, rocky coast north of Portland changes to sandy beaches south of the city. Inland the terrain varies from level to rolling farm and pasturelands interspersed with heavily wooded areas. Topographic features include Sebago Lake, 15 miles north of Portland; many smaller lakes; the Fore, Mill, Stroudwater and Presumpscot Rivers; and numerous streams. North of Sebago Lake are the White Mountains.

Portland is on an elevated peninsula overlooking Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a natural harbor, one of the deepest and safest on the Atlantic Coast.

C l i m a t e
Moderate. Proximity of the ocean has a moderating effect on the climate. Sea breezes provide air conditioning during summer days when temperatures may soar to the high nineties. Breezes also make the winters warmer and more moderate although the temperature may drop to zero or below. Average annual precipitation totals approximately 43 inches of rainfall and 73 inches of snowfall.
