Memphis, located in the extreme southwestern corner of Tennessee, sits on the Chickasaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. The city's location at the junction of three states, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, make Memphis a hub of the dynamic Mid-South.
Surrounding terrain of the Memphis region varies from the high bluffs of Memphis to the slightly hilly countryside of western Tennessee and northern Mississippi to the low flatlands of eastern Arkansas. Average elevation is 264 feet above sea level. Major topographical features include the Wolf River, flowing through the northern section of the city; Lake McKellar and other lakes; Nonconnah Creek; and three islands: Treasure, City and Presidents. In addition to Memphis, there are six incorporated communities in Shelby County.
